Description

Bygdøy allé 39 is a corner building within a cohesive Functionalist block bordered by Bygdøy allé, Frederik Stang’s gate, Balders gate, Vestheimgata, and Gabels gate. In the courtyard lies the auditorium building of Gimle Cinema, which has its entrance on the corner façade where Bygdøy allé meets Frederik Stang’s gate.

The building was designed by Ragnvald Tønsager and Gunnar Schultz and was constructed in 1939.

Both the building and its outdoor areas are designated as a conservation zone. In addition to exterior protection, selected interior spaces in Gimle Cinema, including the entrance, auditorium, lobby with restrooms, and the projection room, are protected.

Gimle Cinema is a small, traditional cinema located in the Frogner neighborhood of Oslo. The cinema is named after the Gimle area.

It opened on August 23, 1939, and has been known from the start as a theater for art and quality films. It was modernized in 1962 and underwent major renovations in 1997. The cinema has only one auditorium with 260 seats and offers beer and wine service in the foyer which can be considered as a very rare fact due to the strict alcohol restrictions.
