The house with its curves defines the intersection.

Description

The course of the surrounding streets gave the building a triangular shape. The cinema is located on the ground floor at the widest point with the outer wall facing the neighbouring buildings.

According to the massive walls and the little windows, the absence of real ribbon windows at the round corner behind the balconies, we assume that the house is masoned. With a concrete construction, the spaces between the windows would not have to bear so much load. The building therefore appears somewhat defiant. The round shape and the balcony balustrades give it a more light appearance. The former signs Kino Corso are still visible on the plaster.

History

We found just a few information about the building. It is called cinema, but most of its part is used for apartments. It was built in 1929 and opened in 1931. In 1931 existed 16 cinemas in Basel for almost 150,000 inhabitants. Cinema Corso is today the oldest still existing cinema building in the city. It was operated until 2011. In 2017 it is converted into an apartment.
